1,700 new croft holdings were created and 1,300 existing ones enlarged in the Hebrides. The majority of the new holdings had new houses built on them. Many of the existing houses on the enlarged crofts were improved or enlarged. Few crofts have been created or enlarged since. However, very little has been written about the houses themselves. What were they like, and why? How did they differ from those already there? Were they successful? And what was their legacy? Addressing these and other questions lies at the core of this book.
