For Want of Land
The creation of new crofts and enlargement of existing ones in Scotland is generally referred to as land settlement. From 1919 to 1939 land settlement was at its peak in the Outer Hebrides, and in the Inner Hebrides on Skye, Raasay, Tiree and Coll. These islands were the centre of Hebridean land settlement activity and were profoundly affected by it. Very few new crofts have been created since. This book breaks new ground by analysing how land settlement legislation and policies were translated into action on the ground.
